Jeff Porcaro wrote “Toto” on their tapes to tell the band’s own demos apart from everyone else’s. The press was told for years that it came from the dog in The Wizard of Oz; David Hungate later offered the Latin in toto — “all-encompassing” — and the band kept that.
Paich, Jeff Porcaro and Hungate played together on Boz Scaggs’s Silk Degrees, and the core of the band formed there. Paich and Jeff Porcaro had met much earlier, in high school.
Toto IV won six Grammys, among them Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Rosanna”. On the timeline you can see the bass chair changing hands that same year: Hungate out, Mike Porcaro in.
Steve Porcaro was seeing Rosanna Arquette at the time and the name came from her, but Paich has said the song is not about her.
Steve Porcaro wrote “Human Nature”, Lukather played the guitars on “Beat It” (the solo is Eddie Van Halen’s) and Jeff Porcaro was on drums. In their own biggest year the band was also working on someone else’s biggest record.
The band wrote most of the score for David Lynch’s Dune, an unusual commission for a rock band.
After Kimball left, the lead vocal chair was offered to Richard Page of Mr. Mister. He turned it down to keep his own band; the chair went to Fergie Frederiksen and did not last two years.
Fergie Frederiksen can still be heard singing backgrounds on “Could This Be Love” on Fahrenheit, after he had already left. Miles Davis plays trumpet on an instrumental on the same record.
Jon Anderson sings backgrounds on “Stop Loving You”. Guests like this are the rule on TOTO records rather than the exception — the band was a session network to begin with.
The band was thinking about working with Kimball again when the label pushed Jean-Michel Byron on them. He was let go as soon as the tour ended, and the lead vocal chair then sat empty for eight years, with Lukather singing.
Jeff Porcaro died on 5 August 1992, aged 38. The band considered stopping, and largely carried on at his family’s urging. Simon Phillips, a drummer Jeff had admired, took the chair — and held it for twenty-two years.
The band regrouped in 2010 for a short European run to benefit Mike Porcaro, who had been diagnosed with ALS. What was meant to be temporary stuck, and the timeline’s long final stretch starts there.
Lukather has said that despite its popularity he does not like “99”, and that it is among the band’s own least favourite songs.
Weezer covered “Africa” and put it back on the charts; TOTO answered by adding Weezer’s “Hash Pipe” to their own set.
Lukather described the last 2019 show as the end of that configuration of TOTO. The band returned the following year with a different line-up — those are the bars that stop at 2019.
